MSM - The Miracle of MSM
The Miracle of MSM
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane and is the vital nutritional dietary source of sulphur that is found in our living tissues. (Do not confuse it with sulphites and sulphates which are used as food preservatives and can be extremely harmful. MSM is a totally different substance!). Sulphur is involved in many key body functions, including pain control, inflammation, detoxification and tissue building, making it particularly ideal for arthritis sufferers however it has many other benefits.
MSM in foods
MSM is present naturally in foods such as fresh fish, meat, eggs, onions, garlic, cabbage, brussel sprouts and beans however it can be destroyed by even moderate processing such as heating. In those who live on a processed food diet, MSM is probably non-existent and considering sulphur is essential for optimum health, supplementation with MSM would be beneficial.
Amazing results have been reported for pain relief and relief from arthritis in people taking daily supplements of MSM. Clinical evidence gathered on arthritic patients using MSM at the Reagan State Science University showed there is "a significant relief of pain and stiffness along with reduced swelling and inflammation.". In some cases MSM has postponed the need for hip and knee replacement.
Trials using glucosamine and MSM have found this combination to be significantly more effective than glucosamine alone. You will often find MSM included in a glucosamine supplement, however for severe cases of inflammation I usually recommend a glucosamine supplement containing MSM, such as Frame Essentials, to be taken in conjunction with additional MSM. If you have arthritis or joint pain take at least 1500 mg glucosamine a day and 2000 mg of MSM, all in divided doses with meals. Severe cases may require up to 6000 mg of MSM and 3000 mg glucosamine per day. Benefits usually become evident in 2 to 21 days.
The accelerated repair effect of MSM does not only occur in arthritic patients but is also evident in sports or other injuries such as strained muscles, torn ligaments or sprained joints. It also facilitates quicker healing after surgical procedures and lessens the formation of scar tissue.
Asthma and eczema
Research has shown that, when available at sufficient levels, MSM appears to coat all the mucous membranes of the body, creating a shield through which air-borne allergy-causing contaminants such as household dust, pollens etc. can be shielded from entering the tissue of the lungs and nasal passages, thus reducing the affects of hayfever and asthma. Severe cases of asthma and eczema may require up to 6000 mg MSM per day.
A protective shield
By coating all the mucous membranes, MSM also provides a hostile living environment for unwanted low-life parasites such as giardia, and even hookworm can be dissuaded from entering the walls of the stomach and intestines. In addition, undigested food toxins are deterred from entering the bloodstream through a “leaky gut” thus reducing one of the most common causes of allergies, eczema and arthritis.
MSM supplementation is safe as drinking water. Exceeding your tolerance level may increase stool frequency in which case you simply reduce the dosage. MSM has been proven to work better in conjunction with natural Vitamin C and lots of purified water.
