May 2017

Hi Visitor, here is my latest eNewsletter

I need to blame something on the fact that my April newsletter never materialised, so let's put it down to all the public holidays shall we? Five weeks in a row -if you count the protest marches on 7 April when even yours truly was out there on the streets with her placard, like a has-been hippy haha - we have had a public holiday or two every single week. This second week of May is going to be quite a shock to the system, having to suddenly cope with a 5 day working week!

May is my favourite month so let's kick off with some extra-special specials to celebrate this beautiful time of year in South Africa:

The added CLA is great for reducing abdominal fat but this product has so many other benefits which you can read about here.

Only 9 bottles left and expiry date is Oct 2017 so don't miss out.

Normal Price: R395

While stocks last: R320

Remember shipping is free for orders over R2000, otherwise R75 to courier to your door.

Should ear infections be treated with antibiotics

After bringing up 3 sons I appreciate how difficult it is to watch a child suffering with earache. One just wants to do whatever necessary to relieve them of the pain. This is why, inspite of knowing that most ear infections will resolve safely on their own, we moms are inclined to gratefully grab that prescribed antibiotic without hesitation. Sadly, even though antibiotic treatment of ear infections is the norm, it provides limited additional benefit and comes with serious long-term consequences. I've harped on about the dangers of antibiotics ad nauseam in previous newsletters so I won't go into that now apart from a reminder that a child's gut microbiome may never fully recover after antibiotic use, thus leaving them susceptible to nasty pathogens and a compromised immune system.

Some ear infections are caused by a virus or food sensitivity in which case antibiotics will not help at all. However, reviews have shown that even when an ear infection is caused by a bacteria, which is about 70% of the time, antibiotics have had limited benefit and untreated children usually recover within 48 hours or less anyway.

So the alternative is to watch and wait which sounds insensitive I know. So as soon as your child develops ear ache try the following:

  • Garlic infused olive oil, warmed slightly and used as eardrops, will sooth and relieve the pain (not to be used if eardrum ruptured!)
  • Xylitol nasal spray to remove pathogens
  • A probiotic supplement will support gut and immune health.
  • Consider treating with herbal antivirals and antimicrobials which can heal without harm.

However, if there is no improvement after 48 hours, see your doctor and if antibiotics are prescribed don't despair. There are steps you can take to limit the negative impact of antibiotics.

There are also steps you can take to make your child less susceptible to ear infections:

  • A child with a strong immune system is less likely to get ear infections so ensure your child's diet is nutrient-rich and supplement to strengthen the immune system.
  • Ensure your child gets enough time in the sun or supplement vitamin D.
  • Breastfeeding for the first 6 months is adviseable where possible. Formula fed babies tend to get more ear infections.
  • Identify food sensitivities and eliminate them from your child's diet. Dairy is a common one.

 Melatonin for GERD!

I recently listened to a training webinar on Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, the most common symptoms of which are heartburn and reflux. The whole webinar was extremely informative, however what surprised me is the recent practice of using Melatonin to treat GERD. Melatonin is a hormone and its main role is to help us sleep. I take a 5mg melatonin supplement at bedtime when I have a big day ahead and my brain just won't shut down. Because of its action on the brain one would think of it as a hormone produced only in the brain. However the truth is that 400 times more melatonin is produced in the gut than in the brain! This is why it can assist with GERD and it does this by:

  • decreasing the rate of transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation
  • inhibiting gastric acid secretion (but not in the way a PPI does)
  • stimulating bicarbonate secretion in the duodenum

By the sounds of it, if you're struggling with heartburn and reflux, a 5mg dose of Melatonin in the evening is worth a try. See Xymogen Melatonin on the attached product list.
