The start of a new month and time for me to put pen to paper - well actually, fingers to keyboard - and bring you the first monthly Orchards Nutrition Centre newsletter. Achieving outstanding health isn't just about nutrition and exercise, it's also about overcoming the brainwashing and propaganda of conventional medicine. If you don't believe you have any power over your health, you'll never get healthy. Where am I going to with this? You’ll know once you have read this months topics:
  1. The Swine Flu Hype
  2. To Gram those Mammos or not?
The Swine Flu Hype
Some are afraid of contracting the flu while others are shouting “Don’t be afraid of the flu, be very afraid of the vaccine! Outcries from alarmists come in many forms, some reading like the script of a horror movie:
  • The virus wasn't natural in origins, it was engineered in a lab.
  • The greatest crime in history is underway, a designed mass genocide!
  • Shots will be mandatory and some will likely contain actual viruses to further the seeding process! Check this one out and see if you can sleep tonight! Enough!

Although it sounds frightening, in reality, the word 'pandemic' only means that a new virus is spreading across the world. Those of us who quaked in fear from the expected SARS epidemic and shook from the anticipated avian flu pandemic may feel they’ve been here before. All in all I’m hoping its much ado about nothing and that this “pandemic” will never actually materialize. But in the meantime I field calls and emails on a daily basis from panicky parents wondering what to do about their school-going children. And believe me, as a parent myself, I do understand the concern, but still advise parents to try not to get caught up in the hype. If you dig even slightly below the surface you easily find that the swine flu is often times very mild and by all accounts will cause far less deaths than regular flu. Since the virus first reared it’s ugly head in April this year, confirmed H1N1 deaths world-wide have not reached the 1000 mark (at time of writing). Please don’t think I’m trying to downplay the loss of lives but it’s a fact that more people are killed on the roads in one day. Apparently globally, deaths from regular flu since January this year exceed 13000 already. Despite predictions of massive numbers of deaths and the arrival of doomsday, the virus has remained a relatively mild disease thus far, something we know happens each year with flu epidemics.

By all means take extra precautions to protect your children but as yet there is no real need for panic and certainly no need to keep a healthy child out of school. Follow these natural methods:

  • Encourage good hygiene and regular washing of hands.
  • Ensure they dump the junk food and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Boost your child’s immune system with a quality wholefood multivitamin and mineral supplement such as Natural Vibrance Green Food or Flu Fighters or AIM’s Garden Trio and add 2-3g vitamin C and at least 1000 mg of a good quality omega-3 fish oil.
  • Spend time in the sun every day to boost your vitamin D levels and as such your immunity
  • Get plenty of exercise and good quality sleep.
  • Avoid hospitals –prime breeding grounds for all types of infections.
  • Be prepared, not scared.

To vaccinate or not?

Personally I would not take the regular flu shot and feel no differently about this one. But that is my own opinion. What really concerns me though, is the scale and speed of the planned vaccination programme given that the overwhelming majority of those who have contracted the virus have had very mild symptoms, and especially in the light of what happened when we had the last swine flu scare in 1976. That was a fiasco if ever there was one. Health officials rushed through a vaccination programme that resulted in several hundred vaccinated Americans developing Guillain-Barre paralysis. The US government paid out $93 million in compensation to victims who had suffered paralysis from the vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths.

Watch the CBS " 60 MINUTES" documentary on the swine flu epidemics of 1976 in the U.S. This documentary was banned immediately after the first showing in 1979 and now 30 yrs later it is doing the rounds on the internet. ( And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized. Fast-forward over three decades later, and now in 2009 there is similar vaccine propaganda brewing. Baxter and Novartis, two pharmaceutical giants are racing to get the vaccine out first. Will there be time for proper testing of the vaccine before the planned mass vaccination campaign? I certainly hope so. Are you ready to be Big Pharma’s guinea pig? Seems there is much concern around the ingredients in the vaccine especially the immune adjuvants, which speed up the response time of the vaccine. Apparently the chosen adjuvant is squalene which has been strongly linked to Gulf War Syndrome. As happened in 1976 could the vaccine end up being far worse than the disease itself?

Have a look at what well-respected, retired neurosurgeon, Dr Russell Blaylock has to say on the vaccine issue. ( There is a lot of misinformation out there, but at the same time just as much information out there is true. Everyone should seriously do their own due diligence and research appropriately. Still, this will be a difficult decision for a lot of people to make, and for the sake of your children, do your homework. They are the innocent ones and need the truth on their side.

The swine flu vaccine saga may bring to mind the theme song to Donald Trump`s TV show which began, "Money, Money, Money"! It may be interesting to watch the stock prices of Baxter and Novartis as they gear up to sell billions in vaccines. Oh Dear…Perhaps it’s time to recall what Hippocrates proclaimed: “The natural force within each one of us is the greatest healer of disease”.

To Gram those Mammos or Not

Ladies, it seems that if we don’t keep “abreast” of things we’re likely to get caught in a “booby” trap…HaHa. Seriously though, did you know that one in 3 breast cancers detected in publicly organized screening programs is over-diagnosed? And according to a meta-analysis of screening programs in Canada, Australia, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom and published online July 9 in BMJ, over-treatment inevitably occurs at the same rate. Over-diagnosis of cancer refers to cancers that grow so slowly that the patient dies of other causes before it produces symptoms or to cancer that is dormant or even regresses. (Seven times as many cancer tumours are discovered during autopsy than are discovered during a person’s lifetime. Townsend p124 June 2004). Furthermore, as it is not possible to distinguish between lethal and harmless cancers, all detected cancers are treated, very often unnecessarily and perhaps even causing more harm than good. Mammography has become one of medicine's "close calls," and one that has received a lot of public attention recently, with over-diagnosis and over-treatment being just two of the issues. Decades ago in 1974, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) was warned by professor Malcolm C. Pike at the University of Southern California School of Medicine that a number of specialists had concluded "giving a women under age 50 a mammogram on a routine basis is close to unethical."!! A strong statement indeed but considering the following, then is it really all that unreasonable:

  • The routine practice of taking four films of each breast annually results in approximately 1 rad (radiation absorbed dose) exposure, which is about 1,000 times greater than that from a chest x-ray. Any dose of ionzing radiation is capable of contributing to cancer. Even the American Cancer Society lists high-dose radiation to the chest as a medium to high risk factor for developing cancer
  • Screening mammograms require breast tissue to be squeezed firmly between two plates. This compressive force can damage small blood vessels which can result in existing cancerous cells spreading to other areas of the body
  • The rate of false positive results from mammograms is also very high, leading to unnecessary biopsies, radiation, mastectomies and lymph node removal. A National Cancer Institute study showed that over the course of nine mammograms for women between the ages of 40 and 69, the risk of a false positive was well over 40 percent
  • Cancers that exist in pre-menopausal women with dense breast tissue and in postmenopausal women on estrogen replacement therapy are commonly undetected by screening mammograms.

Self-examination better

A large-scale screening study published in September of 2000 by epidemiologists at the University of Toronto revealed that monthly breast self-examination following brief training, coupled with an annual clinical breast examination by a trained health care professional, is at least as effective as mammography in detecting early tumours, and also safe. If this is true then how can the use of screening mammograms be justified when we know that all forms of ionizing radiation increase the risk of developing cancer and heart disease?

Thermography best

A highly advanced, safe and more accurate than mammography, but much maligned, detection tool for breast cancer, breast thermography, is available in South Africa. It involves using a heat-sensing scanner to detect variations in the temperature of breast tissue. It uses no mechanical pressure or ionizing radiation, and can detect signs of breast cancer years earlier than either mammography or a physical exam. Mammography cannot detect a tumor until after it has been growing for years and reaches a certain size. Thermography is able to detect the possibility of breast cancer much earlier, because it can image the early stages of angiogenesis i.e. the formation of a direct supply of blood to cancer cells, which is a necessary step before they can grow into tumors of size.

I am thrilled to announce that I have imported two new products from Canada recently.

1. See Yourself Well DHA Essentials This is predominantly an omega-3 fish oil product so in case you’re wondering why I needed to add it to my present range of Omega-3 supplements let me explain. By now you know that the essential fatty acids in fish oils are omega-3 DHA and EPA. Our bodies cannot make these essential fatty acids so we either have to eat lots of fatty fish such as sardines, salmon and tuna, (which is not recommended these days due to heavy metal contaminants) or take a fish oil supplement. In the regular See Yourself Well or Life Support brands of Omega-3 and for that matter 99% of brands on the market, the EPA content is higher than the DHA content and this is what regular people require for heart and joint health and immunity. However when it comes to brain and nervous system development and health, all studies show that it is DHA which does the heavy lifting. DHA Essentials contains a much higher ratio of DHA to EPA and is specially designed for pregnant and lactating women and their babies as well as children or young adults with learning or motor skills disabilities or older adults at risk of degenerative brain and neurological disorders. Read more here. DHA Essentials is a brand new product manufactured by Nutratec under the See Yourself Well brand name of which I am proud to be soul importer and distributor in SA because I really haven’t found a better quality fish oil anywhere. 2. JointFlex Pain Relieving Cream This is not a new product but it has never been available in SA before. After it was recommended to me, I managed to get some samples shipped out and for the past few months I have had friends and family trying it out with excellent results. Its recommended for: Arthritis Pain, Backache, Knee Pain, Shoulder Pain, Hip Pain, Neck Pain, Muscle Sprains and Strains, Tendonitis, Bruises and Cramps. We have certainly found that it knocks the socks off any other brands that my “guinea pigs” have tried. It will need to retail at R150 plus, however as an Introductory Offer till end Sept the price is R135. So order asap to avoid disappointment.

There has been a fantastic response to the Winter Promotion on the Omega-3 fish oil supplements. Those of you who need a reminder, scroll down to the bottom of the Winter Newsletter. This offer ends 31 August when prices will go back to normal so get your orders in soon. Remember also to join the Organic Planting Day on 22nd September together with thousands of other South Africans! Click on the Planting Season banner on the home page of my website to register. All that remains is for me to wish you all a warm and happy month of August. And Ladies, since this is our month, a little extra pampering won’t do any harm and that definitely means avoiding the “booby” traps!
