Are you paying for your indulgences over the festive season? Perhaps sitting with a few extra kilos, jeans that no longer fasten, leaving you feeling bloated and uncomfortable? Ah Ha! Gotcha! You didn’t take a scrap of notice of the advice I gave you before the holiday season, did you? And now it’s January, and like half the population out there, you would like to put behind you the dietary indiscretions of the past month and you’ve made a new year’s resolution to take better care of yourself. OK OK, no applauding: It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know this!
Over the past month we’ve (Yes me too) probably accumulated a lot more toxins than normal from eating all sorts of processed foods, chocolates and pastries and indulging in a little more than the usual tot of alcohol. A body over-loaded with toxins can result in a number of symptoms, including constipation, stomach bloat, poor digestion, gas, fatigue, weight gain, excessive mucus, poor concentration, headaches, poor skin, poor memory and depression. Any of these sound familiar to you?
Something needs to be done but where to begin? Well the liver is our most important cleansing organ and it’s also the organ that is hardest hit by over-indulgences of all the wrong things. However the digestive tract and bowels may also be grinding to a sluggish halt. A cleansing diet that will assist the liver to eliminate toxins as well as assist the digestive tract to eliminate toxic waste is probably what we all need now.
There are many such cleansing programmes available and most run along similar lines to the one I’m going to describe below. I suggest that the week before you start this programme have a look at what it entails. If you’ve been a bread, coffee, chips and coke junkie, make it easier for yourself by cutting down on these stimulants and toxins during this week. Make a shopping list so that you are sure you won’t run out of any of the foods required during the 3 day cleanse. Organic vegetables grown in your own home garden would be first choice of course. A proper juicing machine that removes all the pulp is non-negotiable here: a blender cannot be used as a juicer.
As you loosen up toxic waste you need to assist your body to move it out of your system. Cleanse the digestive tract by taking a good fibre supplement such as Herbal Fibre Blend, before, during and after the 3 day cleanse and drink lots of pure water.

The Cleansing Diet Plan

For 3 days you are going to do the same thing each day: On waking drink a cup of hot water with juice of ½ a lemon squeezed into it. Make 300 ml of vegetable juice consisting mainly of carrots with less beetroot and some broccoli or cauliflower, a clove of garlic and small knob of ginger. If you can, add a teaspoon of a green food powder such as Barley Life or Green Vibrance. Drink immediately: do not leave to stand. Breakfast consists of a cup of cooked brown rice with chopped raw tomato, herb salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add some chopped onion if you like. Mid-morning drink 300 ml of freshly made vegetable juice as before. Lunch: a salad of grated carrot, chopped lettuce, celery, chives, cucumber with freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice as a dressing. Mid-afternoon: 300 ml fresh vegetable juice Supper: a bowl of brown rice with raw vegetables of your choice chopped into it, including garlic and onion, herb salt and freshly ground black pepper (optional). At bedtime a drink of hot water with lemon juice and honey will help you sleep.
What else? Drink two litres of pure water a day. This may seem like an awful lot, however water puts no burden on the body and helps to dilute toxins as they are eliminated. Do not take any supplements during these 3 days.

Detox symptoms

While your body is throwing off toxic waste products you may experience some fairly noticeable detox symptoms. Remember though that you are not ill, so please ride them out and do not rush to the medicine cabinet to find something that will deal with the symptoms. Symptoms you may experience are: headaches, frequent urination, excessive mucous production, clogged sinuses, diarrhea, skin rash, joint pain, cough, sort throat, cold or flu symptoms and irritability. By the third day you should have increased vigour, you’ll feel ‘clean’ inside and you will have shed some excess weight.

What now?

Now you need to maintain the new you. Start every morning with hot water and lemon. Drink 1,5 – 2 litres water daily and eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, 60% raw and include onions and garlic wherever possible. Include protein, carbohydrates and good fats with every meal. Pour cold-pressed olive oil over salads. Between meals keep your blood sugar levels balanced by munching on a carrot or apple and some almonds instead of biscuits or sweet. Give your body a rest from mucous-forming foods such as wheat and dairy. Take a good whole food supplement such as Barley Life every day and at least 1000 mg buffered vitamin C and 1000 mg pharmaceutical grade fish oil (not cod liver oil) and exercise regularly.
Once you have regained your health, do not make a religion out of your diet. Being a slave to the body causes anxiety and is not healthy. Use self-control, eat light meals and eat food with nature still in it. Oh yes .. and insist on being happy!

Good Salt, Bad Salt

People are often told to use less salt or avoid it altogether, yet our bodies are made of approximately 70% water and salt solution. The balance of water and salts in our bodies needs to be maintained to ensure optimal and healthy functioning. The problem with salt is not the salt itself but the condition of the salt we eat! Our regular table salt no longer has anything in common with the original salt crystal. With the advent of industrial development, our natural salt is "chemically cleaned" and reduced to just two chemical elements, sodium and chloride. Salt in seawater has 84 chemical elements and for good health we need them all.
Then of course we have the infamous free-flowing table salt, prevented from caking by the addition of aluminium compounds implicated as a factor in Alzheimer’s disease. Avoid this salt like the poison that it is. For table salt grind coarse sea salt in a salt mill. Himalayan Crystal Salt, a natural substance formed in the Himalayan region over millions of years is a healthy and tasty alternative to ordinary table salt containing vital mineral elements. The minerals alkanalize the body's pH and balance the electrolytes, helping to maintain a healthy immune system.
An eight-year study of a New York City hypertensive population stratified for sodium intake levels found those on low-salt diets had more than four times as many heart attacks as those on normal-sodium diets – the exact opposite of what the “salt hypothesis” would have predicted. (1995). Dr. Jeffrey R. Cutler documented no health outcomes benefits of lower-sodium diets. 2000 years ago, Greek medicine had already discovered topical use of salt for skin lesions, drinking salty or mineralized waters for digestive troubles and inhaling salt for respiratory diseases. The healing methods of Hippocrates (460 BC) especially made frequent use of salt. Remember though that he used pure natural sea salt, not salt adulterated by greedy industrialists who remove all the beneficial elements and add harmful additives like fillers and anti-caking agents.

The Truth about Hormone Replacement Therapy

Bet you did not know that on November 23, 2009 two juries awarded verdicts totaling $113 million in favour of two women who got breast cancer by taking Premarin and/or Prempro, HRT drugs known to cause cancer, strokes and heart attacks since 2002. Furthermore there are more than 10,000 cases awaiting trials in a major class action suit from women who took Premarin and Prempro who are believed to have gotten breast cancer from the use of these drugs. You didn’t know this because for some reason the media is not reporting on these lawsuits and their outcomes. Wonder who got to them?
I say “Enough is enough”, so let’s have a look at a few highly important facts that affect at least 40 million women today: In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative, a study conducted on more than 16,000 women proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that the leading menopause hormone treatment, Premarin and Prempro were highly dangerous drugs. They increased the risk of breast cancer, heart attack and strokes significantly as compared to placebo or women who did not take those particular drugs. After the WHI fiasco, millions of women were taken off Premarin and Prempro by their physicians and told they should never use HRT again.
Unfortunately by 2004, the medical groups that provide the guidelines for treatments of women in menopause for conventional physicians, reinstated Premarin and Prempro as the hormone drugs of choice for the treatment of menopausal symptoms but advised that doses should be lower and for a limited amount of time. No study was ever conducted to prove safety or efficacy for these new guidelines.
Today, in 2010 (8 years later), those same drugs are still on the market and physicians are prescribing them with the same impunity they did since their massive launch in 1965. The manufacturers of Premarin and Prempro are once again running aggressive marketing campaigns to doctors and this will be why your doctor probably knows nothing about bioidentical hormones as safe and effective alternatives to Premarin and Prempro.
These estrogen prescriptions are made from the urine of pregnant horses (equiline and equilinin) and the human female body was not designed to receive horse specific estrogen. Uzzi Reis, M.D. author of "Natural Hormone Balance for Women” says it very well. He asks: “Are you a horse? Do you eat hay? Then why take horse estrogen?”.

NO MSG? Don’t be fooled

Have you noticed all the packaged soup powders and sauces now proclaiming "No MSG" on the label? If you look closely, however, many of them are still made with yeast extract, a hidden source of MSG. Autolyzed and hydrolyzed ingredients also contain hidden MSG, so avoid any products made with those.
Sadly, in the quest to produce today’s processed foods, the primary considerations of the manufacturer are taste, mouth-feel, appearance, shelf life and profit. The nutritional value of the product and the effect it will have on the health of the consumer are all-important considerations that are seldom given the attention they deserve. And all the while disease marches on – fed by the fires of profit-mongering and stoked by ignorance. As the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Niels Bohr, once stated, “Science advances funeral by funeral.”
