I recently attended the Bi-annual General Meeting and seminars for our Association for Nutritional Therapy in Cape Town which was thoroughly stimulating for my old brain cells but I especially have to make mention of what were, for me, the two main highlights of this two day conference.

Firstly, a whole day's training session on Natural Vibrance supplements by owner Ange Loock-Shearer, left us in no doubt that these are the creme de la creme of nutritional wholefood supplements. The philosophy behind their wholefood organic range is that real food is truly our medicine. The second highlight just has to be the food we were served! Kudos to Robert at Riverside Estate, Hout Bay who arranged that all our meals came from recipes out of Heidi du Preez's and Karen Tilney's Naturally Nutritious Wholefood Cookbook. Gosh, did we enjoy some stunning food! I came home all fired up to use the book more and immediately made some good old-fashioned 'real' icecream. Well the verdict is that it's good enough to wow your most discerning dinner guests but also to treat your children to good ol' healthy homemade ice-cream that they will really love! With Heidi's permission here is the recipe:

Homemade Honey Ice-cream

2 extra-large free range eggs, 50ml raw honey, 250ml thick cream, a pinch of unrefined salt. Separate the eggs into separate mixing bowls. Add honey and salt to egg yolks and whisk till creamy.Whip cream until thick but stop before it splits and becomes lumpy. Fold the whipped cream and egg yolk mixture together. Whisk the egg whites until thick and gently fold into the egg yolk mixture. Place in the freezer and allow to set overnight.

I didn't have a problem with ice crystals forming but apparently you can also prevent this by adding 2 tsp arrowroot powder to the cream before whipping.

This ice-cream is delicious on its own but you could serve it with the excellent fruit compote that you will also find in this cookbook.

Honey icecream halva with pistaschio nutsOf course you could flavour this icecream with berries, cacoa, vanilla or whatever you fancy but do keep it wholesome and healthy. What you see here is the Halva ice-cream version obtained by adding 3 T tahini (recipe in book too) and 1/4 cup shelled and chopped pistachio nuts. Looks delicious doesn't it? I definitely will be trying this on some dinner guests soon.

 Are you using Red Yeast Rice to lower cholesterol?

Studies on the cholesterol lowering properties of Red Yeast Rice have produced amazing results such as a 22-28% reduction in LDL cholesterol and even an increase in HDL cholesterol and researchers claim it is a much safer alternative to statin drugs. I will go along with safer because it certainly doesn't have all the nasty and dangerous side-effects of statins. However I still recommend it with caution and never prescribe it without adding a CoQ10 supplement to minimise the risk of any adverse effects. Let me explain why. RYR is made by culturing a yeast, Monascus purpureus on rice, which produces compounds called monacolins, substances that inhibit cholesterol synthesis and they do this in the same way that statins do, thereby also depleting Co-enzyme Q10 in the body. 

You will know me as a "cholesterol is not the enemy" kind of person and as such I'm seldom in favour of lowering cholesterol levels but sometimes I am faced with a patient who is overly concerned about a high LDL reading and is going to go the statin drug route if I don't recommend a natural alternative so that is why I stock Xymogen's Red Yeast Rice but as I said before it needs to be accompanied by a bottle of See Yourself Well CoQ10.

That ugly "C" word

I think probably every one of us is affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly. Sadly in spite of all the money being thrown at cancer research it seems we are not winning the war.

Cancer authority, Bill Henderson, claims that hardly any cancer doctors even know what cancer is. They treat cancer as if it were an alien infiltrator in the patient's body but it is nothing of the sort. Let’s remember that a cancer cell is simply a cell that has been forced to adapt itself to certain stimuli or irritants. These may develop in the body as by-products of an abnormal or disordered metabolism, or may be taken into the system from outside in the form of drugs, chemicals, unsuitable foods or other toxic substances. When these stimuli or irritants threaten the life of the cell, the cell will either die or it will adapt itself to the changes in its environment. In doing this it becomes an abnormal cell which unfortunately gets called a cancer cell. (I so wish we could change that name!)

Abnormal cells do not necessarily present a threat to our lives. It is well known that practically every human being at one time or another develops “cancer” cells in the body, but when the body is in a healthy condition, it usually destroys these cells and no cancer develops. Some years ago, Dr Cornelius Rhoads, one of the most renowned cancer authorities, appearing before the Royal College of Surgeons in London, pointed out that ‘persons in normal health appear to have a natural defence against cancer and can throw off the disease after it attacks body tissue’.

Norwegian researchers concluded in 2009 that we each develop cancer up to six times in our lives but two thirds of us simply shrug it off. It is also known that the average person produces several hundred pre-cancerous rogue cells a day.

Cancer isn’t really a disease, it’s the body's reaction to negative experiences or lifestyle choices. For example:

  • Emotional shock or stress can rip the immune system to shreds, leaving the body vulnerable to cancer.
  • What we put into our mouths - the standard Western diet- can cause cancer.
  • Excessive drinking may cause cancer.
  • One of the major causes of cancer is smoking and that is why I find myself so intolerant of smokers who expose their family members, especially their children, to cigarette smoke. Passive smoking can trigger cancerous changes in sensitive individuals.
  • The toxic cocktail of chemicals we are subjected to in our daily lives are also a serious problem. They’re in the air we breathe, in plastics, our water, our toiletries and cleaning detergents and our food and sadly, we can’t avoid them all.
  • Root canals leave nasty toxins in the jawbone that get into the bloodstream. Surprisingly, root canals have been implicated in breast cancer and even prostate cancer yet most conventional dentists don't even recognize that root canals are a problem.

mammogramsOctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and once again we ladies will be urged to go and have our boobies squashed. I have expressed my opinion on mammograms often enough in previous newsletters. There is simply no evidence that mammograms save lives, so I was not at all surprised to discover who initiated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. From Wikipedia: “NBCAM was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca producer of several anti-breast cancer drugs). The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer”.

Perhaps we need to remember that pharmaceutical companies don’t look for cures, they look for customers. That was certainly the opinion of two distinguished gentlemen, Linus Pauling and Robert Atkins:

"Everyone should know that the 'war on cancer' is largely a fraud, and that the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society are derelict in their duties to the people who support them." Linus Pauling, Ph.D.

“There have been many Cancer cures, and all have been ruthlessly and systematically suppressed with a Gestapo-like thoroughness by the Cancer establishment…  Robert C Atkins….MD

My personal opinion? When it comes to cancer I simply have to go along with Julian Whitaker MD who says:                 

"I look upon cancer in the same way that I look upon heart disease, arthritis, high blood pressure, or even obesity, for that matter, in that by dramatically strengthening the body's immune system through diet, nutritional supplements, and exercise, the body can rid itself of the cancer, just as it does in other degenerative diseases. Consequently, I wouldn't have chemotherapy and radiation because I'm not interested in therapies that cripple the immune system, and, in my opinion, virtually ensure failure for the majority of cancer patients."

Artificial Sweeteners

Yikes! It's bikini time again! Please don't let this catapult you into dangerous fad diets. Furthermore don't even consider going the artificial sweetener route thinking this will help to cut down on calories. How these poisons haven't been banned is beyond me, although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised because once again our unscrupulous friends from Monsanto are involved. Results of numerous studies concur that artificial sweeteners disturb the body's ability to count calories and, as a result, diet foods and drinks may wind up encouraging weight gain rather than weight loss. People who regularly consume diet soft drinks are not only at higher risk of weight gain and obesity but also appear to have elevated risks for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and metabolic syndrome than people who avoid diet or regular soft drinks.

I have often seen someone save on calories by drinking a diet soda so that they can feel OK about eating a slab of chocolate after! I wonder who they fooling?
If you're trying to lose weight stick to purified water, distilled if you can as it is best for flushing out toxins. Remember tap water is a major source of toxic chemicals.

Aaaah, so you’re not one of those whose doctor has said: “Quit smoking or DIE!” and now you're feeling rather smug. You’ve been smoking for years and think you’re doing OK? You tell yourself that you’ll quit in time and somehow dodge the bullet that smoking is. Well, you’re not alone. Most smokers harbour the secret hope that they will be spared the disease and death that follows nicotine addiction. Don’t be fooled: With four million people dying every year due to tobacco use around the world, the odds are not in your favor.

 And something else smokers should know:

 According to an observational study reported online October 25 2010 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, heavy smoking in midlife more than doubles the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia two decades later.

The data comprised a cohort of 21,123 members who participated in a survey between 1978 and 1985, when they were 50 to 60 years old. During an average of 23 years of follow-up, 25.4% were diagnosed as having dementia. The study showed that participants who smoked more than 2 packs per day in middle age had a more than 100% increased risk for dementia compared with those who said that they were never smokers. People who reported smoking 1 to 2 packs per day had a 44% greater risk for dementia, and people who reported half a pack to 1 pack per day had a 37% greater risk.

So, maybe you have been fortunate enough to have escaped respiratory disease, cancer or cardiovascular disease thus far. But you need to know your brains are not immune to the long term consequences of heavy smoking such as dementia that can occur in later life. The good news is that individuals who had quit by the time they took the survey did not have a greater risk compared with never smokers. This means it is never too late to quit!
