APRIL 2014

Hi Visitor, here is my latest eNewsletter

Well this started out as my February newsletter, became March and now it’s April! Testimony to a hectic but wonderful past couple of months creating happy memories, and you'll be glad to hear, I am going to spare you all the details! It's also been a busy time in the vegetable garden getting ready for Autumn, the most rewarding time for planting. But I digress and its been 2 months since we last chatted so I'd better make a start.

Pleeez, Stop this low fat nonsense!

I am absolutely horrified out of my wits when a mother tells me she has been advised to put her young child on a no-fat or low-fat diet to prevent her from becoming overweight!

A low-fat diet is out and out a no-brainer, literally! Why? Well contrary to popular belief, the brain actually prefers ketones, the energy units of fat, for it’s dominant use of fuel. (If you're hungry for more detail on this take a look at this article Your brain on ketones.)

This may surprise you as we have always been told that the brain needs glucose for fuel when, in fact, depending entirely on glucose as a primary source of fuel for the brain (and body for that matter) is problematic and can lead to glycation. Glycation, in a nutshell, is the damage to proteins and fats in the bloodstream caused by sugars which then speeds up ageing and is the primary cause of brain degeneration in aging and also in Alzheimer’s disease (Notice the sweet tooth in many patients with this condition). More on glycation later.

The brain is made up of more than 60% fat, mostly saturated fat. But what is more important is that the body’s highest concentration of omega-3 fatty acids is in the brain. So if omega-3 fatty acids are not in your child's diet then they are not in your child's brain.

Children need a right-fat diet not a low-fat diet!

The child’s brain needs omega-6 too but he gets plenty, in fact far too much in his diet. The right ratio should be around 2:1 omega-6s to 3s but for most it is more like 20:1. If children aren’t been fed wild cold-water fish and meat that is exclusively pasture fed, they really do need to be on a fish oil supplement, especially one that is high in DHA, to balance their omega-3 and 6 intake.

DHA Essentials is an excellent fish oil supplement for children. My granddaughter still calls it her yellow sweetie. Its small enough for children to swallow and because of its natural strawberry flavour most children are happy to chew it. I'd love to see more children benefit from this DHA-rich brain food so.... time to run another special.

Special on DHA EssentialsDHA essentials

Until 30 April 2014 knocking R50 off the normal price means you can get         120 capsules of DHA Essentials for R300 instead of R350.                         Kiddies need just 1 a day, teens and adults 2 capsules daily. Postage R25.

See Yourself Well Omega-3 300EPA 200DHA out of stock

I have to confess that when I shouted from the rooftops in my January newsletter about the merits of the new green label omega-3 supplement I totally under-estimated the response and have already run out of stock. I should have more by mid-May. My apologies for the inconvenience.

The worst food for ageing

Believe it or not this is wheat and it is all about wheat causing glycation which I mentioned above. (Get used the word because you’re going to see it often if you’re a health nut like me who likes to read a lot to stay informed).

Simple fact is there are foods that play havoc with your blood sugar and age your joints and skin faster, and wheat, yes even whole wheat, is one of the worst. It contains Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) which are nasty little compounds that speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints, and of course, wrinkled skin! Yikes!

One of the biggest factors that dramatically increase production of age-accelarating AGEs inside your body is high blood sugar levels.  This is why some type 2 diabetics may appear older than they are, however this age-increasing effect is not just limited to diabetics.

wholewheat breadWheat, even whole wheat, is notorius for spiking blood sugar, even higher than pure table sugar. This fact is covered up of course by the massive marketing campaigns by giant food companies that want you to believe that "whole wheat" is healthy for you. However the fact is that wheat contains a very unusual type of carbohydrate, not found in other foods, called Amylopectin-A, which can raise your blood sugar more than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth.

What do we learn from this? Avoid breads, baked goods and wheat cereals if you don’t want to look older than you are!

Rather eat the box?

We’re talking about breakfast cereals which I have never been able to recommend especially since the extruding process used to make cereal flakes such as corn flakes or bran flakes uses high heat and pressure that changes the molecular structure of the cereal protein and destroys the other nutrients found in the cereal. Not to mention the added danger of genetically modified ingredients, along with more sugar and unsafe artificial additives. The following study which happened a long time ago and was probably kept from us, says it all!

In an unpublished experiment performed in 1960 at the University of Michigan involved 18 lab rats divided into three groups. The rats fed cornflakes and water died first and also exhibited abnormal behaviour, biting each other and developing convulsions. The second group, fed the cereal's cardboard box and water, died second of malnutrition. The control group, fed rat chow and water, remained in good health throughout the experiment. The surprise finding was that the rats fed a cardboard box lived longer than those fed the cornflakes.

All proof that we need to avoid processed foods like the plague. Eat real foods – smoothies using kefir or yoghurt, oats or quinoa porridge with butter and raw milk, a delicious vegetable filled omelet made from free-range eggs, are far better breakfast options..

Update on Future Life cereal

Good on Future Life whose manufacturers are now proudly advertising that it is GMO-free! It shows how consumer demand can make a difference. Unfortunately Future Life still contains a lot of soya which presents its own problems. I wrote way back in July 2009 about these.

The New Statin Guidelines…Yikes!

Either run for the hills or buy shares in pharmaceutical companies making statins! Because if (or should I say when) the new statin guidelines come into practice, we’re going to see a doubling of numbers treated.
In a nutshell the new guidelines suggest:

  • Every diabetic should be on statins (this especially mind-boggling because it's been shown that there is a 48% increase in risk for women to become diabetic when on statins!)
  • If risk of having a heart attack is greater than 7.5% over a 10 year period, prescribe statins! But that's not all: Apparently their risk calculator is flawed and over predicts risk of having a heart attack in this 10 year period by 75-150%! So let's hope they'll go back to the drawing board.

And all the time they're changing the guidelines for cholesterol-lowering, they’re looking at the wrong heart disease marker. Heart disease risk is all about inflammation in the artery wall, not cholesterol. Oxidised cholesterol (not high cholesterol) may pose a problem if you have lesions in the artery wall. That is why my blood orders for my patients will always include C-Reactive Protein which indicates the degree of inflammation in the body. I also always list Homocysteine, Lipoprotein(a), (a hereditary factor which I am trying to lower in myself at the moment and will tell you more about that when I’ve been for my follow up tests) and HbA1C to check for insulin resistance.

But let's hear it from a heart surgeon what really causes heart illness. (Thanks Kathy for sending me this link).

Johnny Bowden's opinion in this interview that busts the Cholesterol Myth, which I posted in my December newsletter, is also worth a listen if you didn’t get round to it last time.

Operation Gardasil hits SASchool girl Gardasil vaccine

There is another tragedy playing itself out in South Africa and sadly it is all in the name of trying to gain political points before the upcoming election. Right now hundreds of school girls throughout the country are being given the Gardasil vaccination.

Meanwhile there are researchers who believe "that there was never a need for Gardasil in the first place" and that "Gardasil is possibly the most dangerous vaccine on the market, with the potential to injure, maim, or even kill the children who receive it". Enough young girls have already died or suffered neurological or brain damage due to this vaccine. How many more will it take? For more on this see Gardasil: Child Abuse by Big Pharma.

Questions from subscribers

Question:
I’ve recently read some pieces of literature re the fact of Omega’s and other oils being very difficult to store / supply & deliver / etc. One article mentioned that many Omega’s are already rancid when arriving at stores as they are so sensitive to temperature, etc.  Do you have any knowledge of this? Dorian
Answer:
Rancidity applies more to flax oil which is very unstable however also to inferior  fish oils. If you are plagued with fishy burps after taking a fish oil softgel then for sure your oil is rancid. The ultra-refined, highly concentrated brands that are also protected with natural vitamin E against oxidation such as those in my product range have an expiry date 3yrs after manufacture and in my experience these brands have not gone rancid on me and to my knowledge not on any of my customers either. The manufacturers state that they do not need to be kept in the fridge but preferably at a temperatures below 25 degrees.
Flax oil most definitely has to be kept refrigerated and once opened, use it up quickly.

Are you over-stressed?

The following are the most recognized warning signs of stress:

  • Memory Problems
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Seeing Only the Negative
  • Constant Worrying
  • Unable to Relax
  • Feeling Overwhelmed
  • Moodiness
  • Irritability or Short Temper
  • Sense of Loneliness and Isolation
  • Eating More or Eating Less
  • Aches and Pains
  • Nausea, Dizziness
  • Chest Pain, Rapid Heartbeat
  • Loss of Sex Drive
  • Sleeping Too Much or Too Little
  • Using Alcohol or Drugs to Relax

If you can tick off more than half of the above symptoms then you are suffering from stress-overload and need to take control....now!

I do apologise for the length of this newsletter but it has been 2 whole months remember? If I start May newsletter now perhaps I can publish it in May too... lol.

Enjoy the arrival of Autumn, the best season of the month and I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
