Whew! Almost didn't make it! But the blame for this September newsletter being so late can be placed squarely and fairly on our beautiful Spring days. I know you will understand how it would have taken wild horses to drag me out of the garden these past few weeks. Today, after very welcome rains, one can hear the plants growing and hopefully soon a kaleidoscope of colour will be just reward for all my hard work and for neglecting my other responsibilities.
Latest news on our natural health products regulations
By now you may have had personal experience of not been able to find your favourite health product on the shelves of your favourite health store. The future of natural health products in South Africa is looking dismal, to say the least, but I still believe we can win this war.
Latest news is that, after discovering that the November 2013 regulations are unimplementable for various reasons, our Medicines Control Council has gone looking abroad, met with Health Canada officials and settled on emulating the Canadian system. Is this good or bad news? For pharmaceutical companies it's fantastic news but for our natural health industry, not so good.
The Canadian system is probably the most draconian in the world. Health Canada uses a "legal" phrase to justify its interference in the regulation of natural health products: "Only a drug may cure a disease." Therefore, any time a "claim" is made about the ability of a natural health product to address a health condition, that product is immediately deemed a "drug". This nonsensical logic implies that water becomes a drug if used to treat dehydration but it’s also what has brought about the banning and over-regulation of natural health products that have been used safely and effectively for years, even centuries.
What is behind all this? Money, of course. Pharma will step in and synthesise a natural ingredient in order to be able to patent it and of course the pharmaceutical companies are the only ones able to pay the ridiculous registration fees now being imposed on individual ingredients in a natural health product. In South Africa, where the new regulations have yet to be enforced, we have already seen many of our small and medium sized natural health companies close or be bought out by pharmaceutical companies because they are unable to comply with the stringent registration requirements.
If we don’t do something about this our choice of supplements will be reduced to multivitamin and mineral supplements with lower potency or the most essential ingredients removed or substituted. More than ever the Traditional and Natural Health Alliance needs your support. Please visit their website, and to stay informed and updated, sign up for their excellent newsletter.
Dupuytren's Disease and Boron
I have had some very inspiring feedback from Alice in Canada regarding the use of boron to treat Dupuytren’s Disease. In case you have never heard of Dupuytren's Disease it is a thickening of connective tissue in the palm of the hand which can progress to Dupuytren's Contracture, when one or more fingers bend (contract) into the palm and you cannot straighten them. Needless to say this can be very debilitating and some normal day to day tasks become difficult to perform, as confirmed by Alice here:
"There was a time when I could not use my hand to hold things because the raised tissue was interfering with my grip. Now anything goes - all with taking boron 2 x per day! After 18 months I have full grip and the palm of my hand does not interfere with anything I hold. A cheap natural medicine and it is working".
Before photo on the right - note the puckering due to lumps of tissue under the skin.
On the left you see the result after treatment with boron. Alice has been taking calcium fructoborate at 3mg twice a day, the same ingredient found in our wonderful Super Natural Boron.
An interesting fact is that Dupuytren's is more common in Northern European and Scandinavian countries. Could this have anything to do with less sunlight and vitamin D deficiency, I wonder? I have not come across this condition in South Africa and would be interested to hear from you if you know of anyone born and living in the southern hemisphere who has Dupuytren's. Alice, to my knowledge grew up in Poland, and has lived in Canada for a large part of her life, thus reinforcing my "suspicions".
Boron for Growing Pains
We may know them as growing pains however the actual name is Osgood-Schlatter Disease - quite a mouthful and not a pleasant experience for young kids growing up too fast and too tall! But according to Angé at Natural Vibrance, kids can enjoy pain-free growth spurts. Do have a look at her blog where she explains how 3 x Super Natural Boron capsules a day put an end to her son's growing pains in just one week: Growing Pains Explained.
From Angé's explanation of how Osgood-Schlatter Disease occurs, my guess is that any person, young or old, involved in sports that require running, jumping and bending would benefit from taking a 3mg Super Natural Boron capsule at least once a day to ensure healthy muscle tone and less risk of injury.
The "Why we all need Omega-3" series
Omega-3 essential fatty acids have particular relevance for the eyes and ocular tissues. In fact EPA and DHA attain their highest concentration in the ocular tissues – more than any other site in the body. Consider the important actions that each EFA has on the eye and vision systems:
needed for neural and visual development
is a structural lipid in the retinal photoreceptor and synaptic membrane
protects against harmful light wavelengths, free radicals, and age-associated damage to the eyes
potent anti-inflammatory action
reduces inflammation in the vessel walls as well as the lacrimal and meibomian glands that are responsible for secreting and maintaining the aqueous layer of tear film that prevents dry eyes.

If you don't live in the bush like I do you may have found this in your local health shop however I was very excited recently to find a distributor for Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. It is made in the USA by the company founded by Paul C Bragg, also known as the Father of the Health Movement in America. It is made from cold pressed, organically grown whole apples, in which no chemicals or preservatives have been added, and it contains the "mother of vinegar", a natural gelatinous substance formed during the last fermentation step. If its not in your health shop you can order it from distributor Caren Steyn at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The internal benefits of apple cider vinegar are numerous:
My second find is for Capetonians only so the rest of us will just have to dream on, but I did feel it was only fair to pass this info onto those who can have access to it. Many of us would like to do the juice thing but it can be a shlepp and cleaning that juicer afterwards is a mission. Now you just have to give Hayley Wurr a call to get a daily supply of juices of a quality that you would never be able to make yourself. Visit http://thepressedjuicery.co.za/ and download the pdf that tells you all you need to know, then contact Hayley at email@example.com.
We're talking here about those little sachets they put in our pill or powdered supplement bottles to keep them dry. I must have thrown hundreds of these away over the years but now I have a bottle on the pantry shelf slowly filling up so that I can put them to good use one day. Take a look at Silica sachets, waste packaging or useful commodity. I think this is so clever.
Use it or lose it!
There comes a time in everyone's life where you realise your memory and cognitive skills are not what they used to be. Its called ageing and its normal, however it does cause concern in most of us when it happens. What we need to know is that we are not losing brain cells. That is a myth. What is actually happening is that our brain cells, or neurons, are simply shrinking, causing your mind to slow down and forget things, a condition known as age-associated memory impairment. The good news is it does not have to be permanent. Promising studies show that challenging leisure activities, such as reading, doing crosswords, playing bridge, doing sudoku puzzles, playing cards, chess or board games, even listening to music and dancing, can keep your mind as sharp as a tack as you age. Mental exercise can build new neurons, create new connections, or synapses, between neurons, and strengthen existing synapses. So in fact you can grow your brain instead of letting it just grow old.
In one study researchers found that people's memory depended largely on their attitude towards aging. Those who didn't expect to become forgetful or mentally slow with age had better memories than people who bought into old-age stereotypes. This means that just feeling confident in your mental abilities may help you remember more.
So you need to excuse me now as I'm off to ace that blessed sudoku puzzle that only thought it had me beat this week!
But before I rush off: My latest product list is attached. Quite a few changes and lots more Enzyme Process supplements available again, including the amazing Hair, Skin and Nails and the Cytotrophins. Don't be horrified by the price increases of these supplements. They are from the original imported Enzyme Process range and most contain 90 capsules instead of the 60 capsule bottles we are used to, hence the price differences.
