Description

DMSO-Dimethyl Sulfoxide is an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH₃)₂SO. It is a colorless liquid and is a powerful solvent able to penetrate skin and other biological membranes.   Hence its usefulness as a  transportation device to pass small molecules through skin.

Uses and benefits

DMSO is used topically to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, and muscle and skeletal injuries.

For sprained ankles, reduction of swelling may occur within an hour.

DMSO is also used topically to treat painful conditions such as headache, inflammation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, interstitial cystitis, and severe facial pain called tic douloureux.

It is used topically for  foot conditions including bunions, calluses, and fungus on toenails; and for skin conditions including keloid scars and scleroderma.

DMSO-dimethylsulfoxide eases pain by penetrating membranes. DMSO is able to pass through cell membranes, an ability that has been verified by numerous researchers. A 70 percent to 90 percent concentration has been found to be the most effective strength across the skin. In addition, DMSO can carry other drugs with it across membranes. It is successful as a drug delivery system, ferrying some drugs, such as cortisone, morphine, steroids, and insulin into cells.

DMSO-dimethylsulfoxide and inflammation

Pain relief is reported to be almost immediate, lasting up to 6 hours. DMSO reduces inflammation by several mechanisms. It is an antioxidant, a scavenger of free radicals that gather at the site of injury.

DMSO was the first non-steroidal anti-inflammatory discovered since aspirin.
