Description
Armour Thyroid may be used to treat hypothyroidism and works by replacing the hormones that the thyroid gland is unable to produce.
Desiccated thyroid extract (DTE), a natural thyroid hormone preparation, was the standard treatment for hypothyroidism long before synthetic hormone replacement therapy became the norm. Derived from dried and powdered pig thyroid glands, DTE contains both thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) and it is the closest thing to the thyroid hormone that we make ourselves. This product is great for people who do not convert T4 to T3 very well because it has both forms of thyroid hormones in a ratio of about 4:1. It’s also effective for people who have sensitivities to synthetic forms of T4 and T3.

What is the ratio of T3 and T4 in Armour Thyroid?
Armour Thyroid contains both thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) extracted from the thyroid gland of pigs.
One grain, about 60 mg, of desiccated pig thyroid extract contains about 38mcg of T4 and 9mcg of T3, a ratio of around 4 to 1.
NB: When switching from synthetic thyroid medications to Natural Dessicated Thyroid (NDT) it is important to get professional advice as to the correct dosage to start with and then test your levels of TSH, T4 and T3 regularly.
The origins of NDT
The concept of including organ tissue in the diet for the treatment of disease i.e. “like treats like” is as old as the history of man (called organotherapy). In fact, it was from empirical observations of this kind, that modern endocrinology developed. For centuries, there has been the belief, that inherent in the organ is the means of healing that organ. The 16th Century Doctor Paracelsus declared “The heart heals the heart and the kidney heals the kidney”. Since then, many observations of the effects of supplying tissue extracts have been reported in medical literature. Harower – 1933, covered a whole range of these, noting the effects of oral administration of heart extract for heart problems, and the use of organ material by various ancient peoples throughout the world is well known.
