Barberry berberine, what is it?

Nature’s natural GLP1 Activator

Barberry Berberine is a bioactive compound that can be extracted from several plants, including a group of shrubs called Berberis.

Technically, it belongs to a class of compounds called alkaloids. It’s yellow and is often used as a dye.

Berberine has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, where it has been used to treat various ailments.

Now, modern science suggests that it has impressive benefits for many health concerns.

Berberine lowers cholesterol

Berberine lowers cholesterol through a mechanism different than that of the statin drugs, suggesting potential use both as an alternative to the statins and as a complementary therapy that might be used with statins in an attempt to gain better control over cholesterol. In a controlled Chinese study it was shown that berberine, administered 500 mg twice per day for 3 months, reduced serum cholesterol by 29%, triglycerides by 35% and LDL-cholesterol by 25%. The apparent mechanism is increasing the production of a receptor protein in the liver that binds the LDL- cholesterol, preparing it for elimination. Berberine has been tested in hundreds of studies.

Berberine has a variety of functions inside cells. One of the main functions is activating an important enzyme called AMPK, which regulates metabolism.

It can reduce metabolic syndrome

Through its ability to reduce high blood glucose levels, as well as cholesterol and triglyceride levels, berberine can reduce metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance) and aid in weight loss. Poorly managed blood sugar metabolism is associated with insulin resistance, a condition that makes it difficult to lose weight. If insulin resistance is not managed it can lead to numerous conditions including increased weight gain, diabetes, Polycystic ovary syndrome, abnormal cholesterol or cardiovascular disease.

Berberine may:

  • increase glycolysis, helping your body break down sugars inside cells.
  • decrease sugar production in your liver.
  • slow the breakdown of carbohydrates in your gut.
  • increase the number of beneficial bacteria in your gut.
  • reduce fasting blood sugar and postprandial glucose levels as effectively as commonly prescribed hypoglycemic drugs such as metformin.
  • reduce total cholesterol, reducing triglycerides & LDL cholesterol whilst improving HDL cholesterol.

In a 2008 study of 116 people with diabetes, taking 1 gram of berberine per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 20%

It also lowered haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), a marker of long-term blood sugar regulation, by 12% and improved levels of blood lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides.

According to an older review of 14 studies, barberry may be as effective as certain oral diabetes drugs, including metformin, glipizide, and rosiglitazone.

Furthermore it works very well in combination with lifestyle changes and has additive effects when used with other blood sugar-lowering drugs.

Improves liver function and reduces non alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Improves blood pressure in those with hypertension. Berberine may help control blood pressure, particularly in individuals with high blood pressure or diabetes. It has been shown to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Berberine can also improve blood vessel function and reduce inflammation, which are factors that contribute to high blood pressure.

Suggested dosage for this supplement:

1 capsule twice daily.

Potential Side Effects:

While generally well-tolerated, berberine may cause mild digestive issues in some individuals.  This can be a positive result as it attempts to balance the gut microbiome and it may just need a few days of perserverance for issues to be resolved.

Drug Interactions:
Berberine can interact with certain medications, particularly those used for diabetes and liver health.
